Her er mange ulike varianter og stillingstyper. Svart får den frivillig innestengte franskløperen ut i frisk luft, men tvinges til gjengjeld over i stillinger som ikke "ligner på fransk". Noen varianter kan blant annet også oppstå fra dronninggambit.
